Los Pacaminos - Strengyn - Clara Barker - Krista Magee - Amber meal deal

 <date>2009-11-19</date>

Los Pacaminos are a band you can absolutely count on for a great night out! The band is fronted by one of the UK’s finest and best loved vocalists - Paul Young. However, Paul is not the only luminary in this seven piece band; some of the finest musicians in the business team up to present an incendiary mix of norteno, mariachi, western swing, country, blues, rock’n’roll classics and original material. This lively, fun-filled music will create an great party atmosphere!

There will be a free tequila prize draw for audience members who wear Stetsons, Sombreros or any Tex-Mex headgear – making it a tequila-fuelled party night!

Outstanding Manx singer-songwriter and guitarist Clara Barker has recently agreed to join the party. Clara is playing for the third time as support for a JonnoPromotions event, having previously supported the Dylan Project and Jeff Lang. She will be opening the show and making her Gaiety debut as a musician.

Strengyn are also supporting Los Pacaminos. The local duo recently supported Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam when their performance was extremely well received. They first played together in public as part of the Isle of Man GuitarFest, organised by JonnoPromotions, in August 2008.

JonnoPromotions has been lucky enough to receive the assistance of Krista Magee and her young art students at the Isle of Man College. They are designing a special stage set for the gig (pictured below with the “flats” that they have designed and are painting).

Amber (the bar and restaurant under the Chesterhouse Hotel on Loch Promenade) is offering a pre-gig meal deal for £10. A bowl of chilli with nachos and a bottle of Corona (or shot of tequila)! Available from 5pm on Saturday 28th.

Clive Gregson Songwriting Workshop (IOM Arts Council Event)

 <date>2009-09-26</date>

While on the Island, accompanying Patsy Matheson at the Centenary Centre in Peel on Saturday 3rd October, Clive Gregson will be leading an Arts Council sponsored songwriting workshop for up to 20 people on Sunday 4th October.

Clive is probably best known for his successful work with Manx vocalist Christine Collister and as the leader of cult band Any Trouble.

He has also toured and recorded with Richard Thompson, Nanci Griffith, Eddi Reader and Boo Hewerdine, and been voted one of the ‘1,000 Great Guitarists’ by Guitar Magazine.

Clive, who is also appearing in the Autumn (2009) throughout the UK as special guest of Jools Holland, will be accompanying Patsy on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and accordion.

If you are interested in attending then contact the Arts Council office (www.iomarts.com) to reserve your place and get details of the Venue for the workshop (will last approx 3 hours from 2-5pm and there will be a charge of £5 but the event is being heavily subsidised by the Arts Council). Further details below.

Visit http://www.jonnopromotions.com/viewevent.php?eid=83 for more background information about Patsy & Clive.

Clive’s explanation of his Songwriting Workshop

Whether you're a seasoned songsmith or have never written a song before, this workshop is aimed at you. We will be working through a number of exercises designed to get you from initial inspiration to a finished song. Along the way we'll be looking at song structures, the editing process and tips and ideas to make your songwriting sessions more productive, original and fun. The exercises will be colloborative and we'll also take some time to listen to each other's efforts and exchange ideas and opinions.

I don't mind total beginners as far as the actual songwriting goes but instrumentalists need to be reasonably self contained. The workshop is not suitable for big gear set ups, drum kits etc and instruments that are not designed for accompanying singing, e.g. tin whistles, saxophones, etc.... Instrumentalist should be reasonably competent ... three chord strummers are fine as long as they can play in tune, in time and are capable of being quiet when asked! 

The most important thing is to have a good attitude and an open mind.... it will not be useful if you arrive thinking that everything you have already written is the work of a genius and therefore untouchable! Unless, of course, that is actually true.... in which case you don't need to be at my workshop!

I present this workshop annually at California Coast Music Camp and Puget Sound Guitar Workshop in the USA, and have also presented it at LIPA, Arts Centres in the UK and at various festivals around the world. If you are a musician looking to add lyrics to your tunes, or a poet who'd like to hear your words set to music, or even a little of both, come on down. Elton, meet Bernie...

Patsy Matheson with Clive Gregson

 <date>2009-08-06</date>

Patsy Matheson, accompanied by Clive Gregson
with local support from Barry Nelson

Following the release of her first solo album in eleven years, A Little Piece of England, singer-songwriter Patsy Matheson is embarking on a series of British dates, accompanied by respected fellow tunesmith Clive Gregson, and the pair will make Peel's Centenary Centre their first port of call.

The show, on Saturday 3rd October, will be Patsy's first gig in the Sunset City and Clive's first visit to the Island since 1996.

Patsy is best known as a founder member of the award-winning acoustic quartet, Waking the Witch.

Critics and fans alike were surprised when Waking the Witch announced they were calling it a day after five successful years on the road.

Yorkshire-based Patsy, Jools Parker, Rachel Goodwin and Becky Mills, whose enviable song writing skills and harmonies had seen them likened to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, had decided it was time to pursue other avenues.

Patsy, who plays trademark mandolin as well as guitars, was a successful solo artist for some time before forming Waking the Witch.

She released two albums, performed solo at Glastonbury and supported top artists including Al Stewart, Christy Moore, Gordon Giltrap, Dick Gaughan, Glenn Tilbrook, The Saw Doctors and the late great John Martyn.

Clive, who is also appearing in the Autumn throughout the UK as special guest of Jools Holland, will be accompanying Patsy on acoustic and electric guitars, mandolin and accordion.

Now re-affirming her strength as a genre-hopping solo artist, Patsy, who penned some of Waking the Witch’s best loved numbers, continues to write diverse and original songs; on tour, she will be plying a mixture of new and vintage material.

The night's support will come from local artist Barry Nelson.

Barry, one of the finest guitarists and singer-songwriters on the Island, has been playing gigs around the Isle of Man and in the UK for more than twenty years as a member of numerous bands. Val Nelson will accompany him on bass and vocals in what is also a Centenary debut.

The show will start at 8pm (doors open 7.30pm) on Saturday 3rd October. Tickets are £10 and available in advance from Celtic Gold in Peel, Peter Norris Music in Douglas, Shakti Man and Ramsey Music Supplies in Ramsey, or www.etickets.im

Pigs On The Wing with Planes Over Paris

 <date>2009-08-06</date>

PIGS ON THE WING

Reuniting for their first gig since TT 2006, Pigs on the Wing, the legendary Manx Pink Floyd tribute ensemble that first played on the Isle of Man in 1997, is playing in the Royal Hall at the Villa Marina, Douglas on Saturday October 10th, 2009. (Doors open 19.00 show 20.00).

The gig is a “benefit” for TT sidecar racers Nicky Crowe and Mark Cox who were injured in an incident at Ballacob on Wednesday 12th June.

Pigs on the Wing are Pete Williamson (vocals, guitars), James Craig (guitars), Roger Leece (drums/percussion), Dick Raine (bass), Brian Foley (saxophone). Ian “Catty” Corlett (keyboards) will be returning from London to play at the benefit, which will also feature Shaz Cleator on vocals. Andy James will be managing the event, Iain Rive is also returning to the Island to run the sound for the gig and Justin McMullin of ELS will be providing the lighting.

Support will be provided by local atmospheric “indie” band Planes Over Paris – featuring the talents of Paul Salisbury (guitar and vocals), Ben O'Hare (drums), Steph Gomaa (keyboards and vocals) and Martyn Cain (bass). Planes are also supporting the Kaiser Chiefs at the Villa in August.

Thanks to generous support from Earystone Quarry, Outdoor Power & Plant, MANN Construction, Tels Skips and Shaun and Sally Craig, a significant part of the venue hire for the event has been paid. All the musicians, the crew, lighting company, the promoter and graphic designer are giving their time free of charge to make this an entirely not for profit event and are hopeful that a significant sum will be raised. This will allow the vast majority of the funds raised from ticket sales to go to Nicky and Mark and their families.

Tickets are £10 each and will go on sale on Saturday 1st August 2009 at 9.30am from the Welcome Centre at the Sea Terminal.

The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage - IOM & MGP GuitarFest 3/4/5 September 2009

 <date>2009-06-26</date>

The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage is an innovation at GuitarFest 2009.

Thanks to the generous support of Manx Telecom, the Acoustic Stage will be a forum for local acoustic guitarists (comprising all styles of guitar playing) and visiting support acts to entertain the Manx public free of charge in the newly opened Villa Marina Arcade – further details are below

The Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage will take place in the Villa Arcade on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons of GuitarFest. There will be 30 minute slots available for local acoustic/electro acoustic guitar players (25 minute set, 5 minute turnaround).

It is expected that Friday afternoon’s slots will be filled by young guitarists recommended by local music teachers.

The Saturday and Sunday afternoon will be a combination of local guitarists/guitar acts selected by JonnoPromotions and recommendations. This is also an opportunity for local guitar players to put themselves forward for consideration.

Approximate schedule is below (timings may be subject to change).

Friday from 12 noon to 5pm slots for up to 10 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Amrit Sond.

Saturday from 12 noon to 5pm slots for up to 10 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Pete Smith & Roger Inniss.

Sunday from 12 noon to 4pm slots for up to 8 local guitarists, followed by a 45 minute set from Michael Berk.

Contact Jonno on acousticstage@manx.net if you are interested in performing on the Manx Telecom Acoustic Stage at GuitarFest 2009!!!

Jerry Donahue of The Gathering to host guitar workshop while on the Isle of Man

 <date>2009-06-20</date>

Jerry Donahue at Peter Norris Music, Finch Road, Douglas - Sunday 28th June at 12 noon.

Jerry is a world famous country/folk/rock player who is a member of the Hellecaster trio and is known as the King of Single and Double String Bending (he's also a really nice guy!).

He will be playing his Peavey Omniac JD signature series Electric Guitar, demsonstrating his string techniques and talking about his gigging life on both sides of the Atlantic.

As this event is being supported by Peavey and by Peter Norris Music there is no admission charge

So come along a week on Sunday for a great time with a truly great Guitarist!

BIOGRAPHY

From his early days in such bands as Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, to notable performances and/or recordings with Gerry Rafferty, Robert Plant, Joan Armatrading, Johnny Hallyday, George Harrison, Cliff Richard, Chris Rea, Warren Zevon, Bonnie Raitt, Hank Marvin, Roy Orbison, Nancy Griffith, The Yardbirds, and The Hellecasters, Jerry epitomizes the consummate guitarists' guitarist.

The son of the late 1940s/50s Big Band leader Sam Donahue and TV and film actress, Patricia Donahue, brother of the late Marc Donahue, and father of singer/ songwriter Kristina Donahue, Jerry has combined the Celtic folk music of his adopted home in the UK with his American rock, blues and country roots to arrive at his own, unique, unmistakable style.

Steve Gibbons Band TT Tour 2009 - Change of Venue

 <date>2009-06-04</date>

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF VENUE

On Tuesday afternoon, JonnoPromotions received information that the licence applications by the South Douglas Old Friends Association relating to the long anticipated Steve Gibbons Band TT Tour 2009 events scheduled to take place on Thursday 4th, Sunday 7th and Thursday 11th June, had been rejected by the latest licensing hearing.

After discussions with the Douglas Police Alcohol Unit and the management of the Old Friends, it was decided that a “dry” venue was the only option and it was agreed that this would not be appropriate for these events.

So with grateful thanks to the Sefton Group, and Steve Harding, the manager, the two concerts scheduled for Thursday 4th and Sunday 7th of June have been relocated to Paramount City, located at the far end of Queens Promenade.

Paramount’s management is sensitive to the audience for this event and have kindly agreed to make some extra seating available in the venue. They will be selling bitter and stout (in bottles and cans) in addition to their normal range of draft and bottled lagers, spirits and soft drinks.

Doors will open at 8pm and the gig will start at 9pm. Last orders will be at 00.30 and the venue will close at 01.00. All tickets for the Old Friends gigs will be honoured on the door at Paramount. Refunds will be available if required.

Jonathan “Jonno” Gollow of JonnoPromotions, who is promoting this event in association with Sure Radio TT, regrets any inconvenience caused to SGB fans and hopes all ticketholders will come down to the newly refurbished and redecorated Paramount City and enjoy the event. “The situation was completely outside my control as this was caused by a technical issue relating to the licence at the Old Friends Club” he noted “but, thanks to Steve Harding at Paramount City, all is not lost and all of us Steve Gibbons fans can enjoy an excellent gig, albeit at a slightly different venue than the one we were planning!”

At present a venue has not been finalised for the gig on Thursday 11th June but it is expected that another venue in Douglas will host the final concert of Steve’s mammoth Up Close and Personal TT Tour 2009.

Gráinne Duffy Band at Peel Centenary Centre

 <date>2009-03-19</date>

Saturday April 11 7.30 for 8pm start.

After releasing her debut album, 'Out of the Dark', in November 2007, Grainne has been receiving some of the best praise an artist could ever ask for.

In England the buzz has certainly started with Classic Rock commenting 'In a world of chick rockers, Duffy is the real deal. Label bosses get your cheque books out sharpish'. While Guitarist devoted a whole front page to the artist saying her debut album boosts 'bluesy Americana from Ireland with genuine worldwide potential', adding what they love most about her is that she has a 'husky voice and plays a mean blues guitar'.

Guitar Techniques continued this well deserved praise commenting 'she plays with both style and feel' and is a 'thoughtful and melodic guitarist', 'her playing is bursting with personality'. Aside her guitar playing it seems Grainne's voice and songwriting have been drawing in fans far and wide.

Recently Grainne was approached by the BBC to offer her original take on the Oletta Adams cover 'Get Here if you Can' which is currently featured in their advertisment on BBC1 and BBC2 promoting programming on Monday nights on BBC.

The track was recorded in none other than The Beatles producer George Martin's renowned Air Studios in London, featuring the talents of former Eric Clapton drummer Ian Thomas, ex Van Morrison and Madonna bassist Steve Pearce, James Hollowell, currently working with David Gray, on Hammond and Piano and Richard Ashcroft's sideman Adam Philips on guitar.

Following on from such Grainne appeared at Glastonbury 2008 with her band on the acoustic stage alongside Joan Baez, Suzanne Vega, Sinead O Conor, Seasick Steve, Glen Hansard and The Blockheads. This year she has performed as opening act to Robben Ford and The Yardbirds.
